High temperatures did not stop the estimated 100 Quest Diagnostics’ employees, interns, and family members, as well as Madison Mayor Mary-Anna Holden and Biggest Loser star Bill Germanakos, from assembling at Fairleigh Dickinson University for the lab testing company’s annual staff versus interns charity softball game.
It started several years ago because interns at Quest, based in Madison, wanted to join the corporation’s softball team, but Steve Bonventre, a company employee, had a different idea—the interns would play an annual charity game against full-time employees.
“It’s about giving back to Madison and the community where we work, and where many of us live,” Bonventre said.
The event is in its third year, the interns were looking for their first win against the full-time employees, and everyone was looking to equal last year’s fundraising tally of $5,000.
“I think everyone had a good time, even though it was, like, a hundred degrees,” said Brian Reynolds, a Quest intern.
At around 5:30 p.m., the event’s start time, Mayor Holden and Mark Dunn, a two-time cancer survivor, threw out the first pitches of the evening.
“This game is a great way to bring in employees and have a positive impact on the community,” said Barb Short, community relations manager at Quest.
Quest employees vote on a charity to donate to for a three-year period. Proceeds from this year’s event are being split between the American Cancer Society and Mayor Holden’s Wellness Campaign.
