Walking programs for youth are crucial for supporting active lifestyles. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans Report recommends that children and adolescents participate in at least an hour of moderately intense physical activity most days of the week and preferably daily. The Centre for Transport Studies concludes that “any moderate intensity activity, including traveling to and from school” on foot is enough to bolster the health of a young person. In order to be effective, walking programs must be appealing to their intended audience; overall they must be fun. Below are a number of ideas that can be implemented in almost any municipality throughout the state. These programs combine activity with education, socialization, and community building to provide youth and communities a broad-based approach to wellness.
