School Wellness Policies specify that all school districts with federally funded school meal programs must create and implement wellness policies that target nutrition and physical activity. The following section gives a brief description of the program. The purpose of including this description in the MWC Toolbox is not only for informational purposes, but to provide a starting point for planning. For instance, in forming a committee to implement a MWC Toolbox program, a mayor or other community leader might, as a first step, reach out to key people involved with School Wellness Policies. Ultimately, the MWC Toolbox can help communities meet the program implementation and evaluation requirements of School Wellness Policy. For example, the Safe Routes to School programs profiled in the Community-Based Approaches section could be used to address daily physical activity needs specified by these policies.
