Seniors In Motion: Walking Programs

Keeping seniors moving is just one way to encourage healthy lifestyles in this demographic group. Walking programs are particularly helpful because walking can be an alternate form of transportation when seniors no longer feel comfortable driving themselves. Walking is one activity that can be done at an individual’s own pace and is very inexpensive to organize. Additionally, a social aspect can be developed if individuals walk together in a community – providing a social outlet is an important secondary gain.

Below are just a few programs that have made walking possible for seniors in their community. Included in these programs are innovative approaches that provide for walking regardless of weather conditions. The primary benefit to these programs is that they require very little in terms of cost, making them feasible for a community of nearly any size. This is one small step that can make a big difference for local seniors.
