Employees in Motion : Wellness At Work Programs : Wyeth

Employees: 930

Wyeth has an extensive wellness program that includes both a fitness center and walking paths around its facilities. The wellness center, which employs four full-time staff, a program manager, and full-time and part-time administrative assistants, reports to the company’s Human Resources department and works with the health services office. The trainers are subcontracted through a company called MediFit.

Wyeth “desk drops” a wellness calendar to every employee to communicate about its programs. Additionally, it hangs banners in the cafeteria, health services office, and other locations to advertise new healthy offerings.

Fitness Center

When employees join the fitness center, they are given a health risk assesment and asked to undergo screenings. They undergo a blood screening for glucose levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides and, if deemed necessary, a stress test. Employees initially test muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility and are retested annually.

The fitness center charges a small membership fee, between $10 and $20, depending on an employee’s income, which includes personal training. Employees who participate in fitness center programs earn FitBucks, which can be used to purchase a wide variety of prizes, including t-shirts, gel seats, yoga mats, heart rate monitors and more. The fitness center also sponsors a number of challenges throughout the year. In the early months of 2006, the company promoted the “Strive for Gold” program to correspond with the Winter Olympic Games. During “Strive for Gold”, employees were challenged to exercise 120 minutes per week and complete an Olympic challenge as part of or in addition to their workout. Olympic exercises included activities that related to skiing, skating, and other winter sports. Employees who participated in theprogram earned FitBucks.

Walking Paths

Wyeth has mapped out walking paths and trails around its complex so that employees can walk on breaks or during lunch hour and know the distance they traveled.
