As you know, obesity and inactive lifestyles have become deadly in the United States, and particularly in New Jersey. Additionally, obesity and related illnesses are costing employers literally millions of additional dollars every year. We must do something to stop this dangerous trend before it’s too late.
As Mayor of [municipality], I want to work with you to accomplish some bold goals in our community. Recently, [municipality] joined New Jersey’s “Mayors Wellness Campaign” (MWC) as a first step to getting our town on the road to active living and healthier lifestyles.
The Mayors Wellness Campaign supports mayors as champions of community health. The goal is to increase opportunities for [municipality] residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing health care costs secondary to obesity. Through public-private partnerships, the MWC provides structure and resources for healthy community initiatives.
MWC encourages Mayors to play a leadership role in supporting local opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles. I have taken them up on that challenge.
Recently, the MWC published its most recent edition of the MWC Toolbox, which is focused entirely on wellness programs in the workplace. Many of them are very easy programs that even small companies can implement in their workplace.

There you can download the “Employer” section of the toolbox as well as numerous supporting materials that will walk you from start to finish as you engage your employees in a wellness initiative.
