Local residents are invited to start the New Year with a morning of exercise, breakfast and an interesting talk on nutrition and fitness on Saturday, January 9, 2010, when the Rose City Steppers host their annual walking “kick-off” at 8:30 a.m. The 2010 kick off will be held at the Madison Commons Clubhouse at One Club Court in the complex off Chatheau Thierry Avenue. Natalie Vetrini, nutrition counselor from the Madison YMCA, will be the featured speaker. Membership sign ups for 2010 will be offered at the program.
All residents of Madison, Chatham Borough, Chatham Township and Morris Plains are invited to join the Steppers’ events. Walkers are advised to wear comfortable clothes, appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle. Membership in the Steppers is not required to participate in any of the monthly walks. Walkers are invited to become members of the Steppers at any walk for a donation of $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for seniors. Members of the Rose City Steppers have the advantage of online health messages, reminders of upcoming walks and activities, and a new member package that will include a “Rose City Steppers” visor, a “Madison Walks” book of local walk routes, and a water bottle waist pack.
“Madison Walks” books are also available for purchase ($5.00) at the walks or at the Health Department, 28 Walnut Street. . “Madison Walks” is a compilation of twenty walk maps, fitness information and encouragement to exercise produced in partnership with the Madison Mayors Wellness Campaign. The books make a wonderful gift for local residents.
Persons planning to stop by the Health Department should note that during the installation of the new elevator at the Civic Center, 28 Walnut Street, the Health Department is in the front, downstairs section of the Civic Center building. The temporary Health Department offices are located in the two-story, white section of the Civic Center, adjacent to the driveway on the right. Use the single red door on the right side of the building (closest to Ridgedale Avenue) and go down the stairs to the department’s temporary offices The Steppers remind folks that exercise is a proven way to increase energy, look younger, lower risk of disease, manage weight and just feel better! Residents are urged to plan some time over the holidays to enjoy some exercise during this busy, stressful time.
