MADISON, N.J. — The Rose City Steppers will walk at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. The group will gather behind the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility on Danforth Road, off Madison Avenue.

The Steppers will cover more than three miles through the Fairwoods neighborhood, as seen on map number 9 in the Madison Walks book. Walk maps will be provided to participants. Also, the 2009 weekly walks on Wednesday nights will finish up with two final walks on Sept. 2 and 9 at 6:30 p.m.

The Wednesday walks will meet in front of the Hartley Dodge Memorial building on Kings Road, opposite the Madison train station. The Sept. 9 walk will include the traditional ice cream stop for an end of summer treat.

Wednesday night walks are about two miles long and are rain or shine events with the exception of thunderstorms or extreme heat, when walking could be dangerous. The Madison Health Department invites local residents to participate on all walks, which are free without membership requirement.

Members of the Rose City Steppers have the advantage of online health messages, reminders of upcoming walks and activities, and a package that includes bright yellow Rose City Steppers reflective safety vests; a Madison Walks book of local walk routes; and a water bottle waist pack.

Walkers are invited to become members of the Steppers at any walk for a donation of $12 for adults and $10 for seniors. Madison Walks books are also available for purchase for $5 at the walks or at the Health Department, 28 Walnut St.

The Madison Walks book is a compilation of 20 walk maps, fitness information and encouragement to exercise. The book is produced in partnership with the Madison Mayors Wellness Campaign.

All residents of Madison, Chatham Borough, Chatham Township and Morris Plains are invited to join the Steppers’ events. Walkers are advised to wear comfortable clothes, appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle. Exercise is a proven way to increase energy, look younger, lower risk of disease, manage weight and just feel better!
