Independence Township was selected to receive the first Mayors Wellness Campaign grant awarded in New Jersey.

The township was chosen for the $1,000 grant during the annual League of Municipalities conference in Atlantic City, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled to receive the very first wellness grant from the Mayors Wellness Campaign,” said Independence Township Mayor Bob Giordano. “We will use the grant to jump-start a program in our town that will benefit all our citizens.”

Twenty-six municipalities joined the Mayors Wellness Campaign during the recent conference, bringing the total number to nearly 300. Each municipality designs their own campaign based on local needs. The Mayors Wellness Campaign is an initiative of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.

The Mayors Wellness Campaign strives to involve mayors in supporting local opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles in an effort to reduce health care costs. The four main components of the program are Youth in Motion; Employees in Motion; Seniors in Motion; and Communities in Motion. Check out the toolbox that is given to each mayor.
