Warren County Town Selected to Receive Very First Mayors Wellness Campaign
$1,000 Grant During League of Municipalities Conference

Trenton, New Jersey – Emily Littman, Director of the Mayors Wellness Campaign, announced today that Independence Township has won a $1,000 wellness grant from the Mayors Wellness Campaign.

Chosen from among all municipalities participating in the Mayors Wellness Campaign throughout the state of New Jersey, Independence Township Mayor Bob Giordano was thrilled to hear his town had been selected to receive the grant during the annual League of Municipalities conference in Atlantic City.

“We are delighted to award Independence and Mayor Giordano our first $1,000 Wellness Grant,” said Littman.

“We couldn’t be happier with the efforts of mayors to promote active living and healthy lifestyles through the Mayors Wellness Campaign and are hopeful this grant will help Independence on the road towards healthy living.”

Twenty-six additional towns joined the statewide Mayors Wellness Campaign during the recent League conference, bringing the total of participating municipalities to over 400. Each town designs their own local campaign around their individual needs.

The Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC) is an initiative of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (www.njhcqi.org) in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities (www.njslom.org). The MWC supports mayors as champions of community health. By encouraging mayors to play a leadership role in supporting local opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles, the intent of the MWC is to reduce health care costs and foster active living and healthy lifestyles for all New Jersey citizens.  MWC provides each mayor with a “Toolbox,” a manual designed to guide them through the implementation of wellness programs in their communities.  Broken down into four major sections – Youth in Motion; Employees in Motion; Seniors in Motion; and Communities in Motion – the Toolbox outlines programs that can be directly used in every community in New Jersey. The Toolbox can also be found on the MWC website at www.mayorswellnesscampaign.org. Funding for MWC has been provided by Aetna, BGIA (Business and Governmental Insurance Agency), Integrity Health, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Partners in Care, Inc. and Pfizer.
