Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean eating at home, according to Chatham Mayor Nelson Vaughn, who launched a contest this month encouraging residents to try some of the healthier dishes served at local restaurants.

During the first three months of 2010, residents who visit participating restaurants may order those dishes and vote for the ones they thought tasted best.

Participating restaurants can submit an entry in one or all of three categories: main course, appetizer, and dessert or beverage. Customers throughout the area can vote for their favorites by e-mailing to the mayor or by dropping off a paper ballot in a box at the Chatham Police Department. In April, the mayor will tally the votes and present the winners during a council meeting.
