Along with shouldering responsibility for municipal government, Township Committee members in this town are expected to take on a new role in 2010 — leading residents in at least one activity to promote physical fitness this year.

With that assignment in mind, Township Committeewoman Carolyn Gaziano has set up a Zumba dance and exercise class, free to township residents, scheduled Saturday. The 11 a.m. session will be at the Somerset Hills YMCA’s Riverwalk facility in Basking Ridge, near the Warren border.

Gaziano’s Zumba class is the first event in Mayor Scott Spitzer’s planned lineup for fitness activities as part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign for 2010. Other activities being considered by members of the Township Committee include a bike ride and a yoga class, Gaziano said.

Spitzer said he plans to lead a hike this spring at the township’s newest park, the Sons of Liberty property off Allen Road in the Liberty Corner section.

Township Committee members are being asked to organize an activity to promote public health and exercise as an expansion of the existing Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, Spitzer said in January, when he was appointed mayor. The statewide program encouraging fitness for residents was approved in a municipal ordinance about four years ago, Spitzer said. However, he said no local activities were ever scheduled as part of the campaign.

Gaziano said Saturday’s session will be led by a Zumba instructor from the YMCA, but she will be at the instructor’s side during the class.

Gaziano said she began doing Zumba last summer. The worldwide dance and exercise program combines aerobic moves with Latin rhythms.

“It’s so much fun,” Gaziano said.

Information on the mayor’s wellness campaign will be posted through the year at www.bernards.org.
